March trilogy by John Lewis
Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

I can’t think of a better way to spend MLK weekend than reading Congressman Lewis’ graphic novel trilogy about the civil rights movement and taking part in a march against police brutality. So many scenes from these books were front and center in my mind, and it’s so timely for him to have recorded and published his memories and thoughts right now and in this format. It’s easier to gloss over words, but harder to ignore the images of police batons crashing into people’s skulls and buses being set on fire. Reading these books felt especially timely right after Donald Trump’s ignorant evaluation of Lewis’ history: “All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!” I was pleased to see reports that this trilogy sold out on Amazon.com this weekend, in response. I think readers of all ages will be hard pressed not to learn at least one new thing from this series. I also liked especially that the history was told against the backdrop of President Obama’s 2009 inauguration. It was beautifully contrasted and beautifully told for such a harsh series of events.
