D is for Django by Django Jones

by Django Jones
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

For kids’ music, this does not make me want to tear my hair out like most does. I think 4 out of 5 stars is actually the top rating I will give any CD, so kudos to Django! Django Jones is a band made up of 3/4 of the members of one of my favorite grownup bands, Girlyman. When Girlyman split up a few years ago, these three formed Django Jones to make kids’ music. This CD features a lot of the same sweet melodies and harmonies, rhythm and guitar, and even counterpoint (a term I learned from one of the songs!) that defined Girlyman’s music. Almost every song has a cute little intro (though I wouldn’t mind if they didn’t dumb down their voices, and it takes a while to get the fact that Django is Doris’ dog and not a weird-sounding kid) that helps explain what they’re about to sing about. Some of the songs are just silly, some are educational (notably the one about counterpoint which seems like an oddly sophisticated topic for a kids’ song but works well; also one about your bones and one about germs), some are just sweet and really solid messages for kids to hear from a young age (Love You Like I Do; All That I See). Go forth and enjoy!
