Sunny Side Up

by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

From the book jacket, this sounds like a book about a girl spending the summer with her grandfather. The cover and title definitely insinuate that this is an easy summer story and it is not. [SPOILER ALERT] However, it turns out that she is down in Florida while her parents help sort out her older brother, who has a drug problem. My library quickly recategorized this “J” (up to 5th grade) book into our “Y” (middle school) section.

With that one caveat, this is a great book and well done. Anyone whose family has ever kept a secret from the kids will relate. Over the summer, as she gets closer to her grandpa and makes a new friend, Sunny also learns the truth about what’s going on with her family.
