It took me a little while to get into this book but once I did it was not only cute enough for a 2nd or 3rd grader (it’s thick but has short chapters and many pictures) but also had clever little details that came back to work their way in and be important to the plot, which I always appreciate. There was some humor that seemed more aimed at grownups which might make it a good read-aloud book. It would also be good for kids who seem timid and scared of things because Shivers is terrified of everything and perseveres. Shivers, his friend Margo, and his first mate Albee the fish rescue Shivers’ family in the end using a combination of cunning, chance and clumsiness.
