In my ever-continuing quest to stay on top of emerging technology, when this book came by I had to grab it. I have a really hard time wrapping my head around radically new concepts like 3D printing when I haven’t seen it in action (and sometimes even when I have!). This book actually did a pretty good job of explaining it. My favorite part was this: “3D printers can even be used to make parts for creating more 3D printers. The RepRap Project designs 3D printers that can reproduce themselves. This means that you can start with one 3D printer and make your own factory!” (p.10). I’m now unclear on what kind of impact 3D printing will have on industry. Maybe it’ll just mean we will spend all our money on the plastic spools that are used where ink and paper would be used in a traditional printer, instead of buying the item we want. Time will tell!
