The Outsiders

by S.E. Hinton

Overall: 5 out of 5 stars

14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis lives with his older brothers Soda and Darry (and yes, those are their real names) after the death of their parents. They are greasers, the rough, lower-income kids (as opposed to socs, the privileged kids). One night a group of socs attack Ponyboy and his friend Johnny and things get out of hand, putting Ponyboy on a road he never thought he’d be on.

I really love a book that’s told like it’s a story you would actually tell someone. As in, there’s not too much extraneous exposition, or literary themes, or details that don’t have any bearing on the actual plot. If you mention someone’s shoes are untied, it’s because he trips over them. If you mention someone stops to pick up the mail, there’s a letter in there that’s important. This book tells one of those stories. To be fair, I did have it on CD from the library, so it was actually being told to me, but I still maintain that it’s well done!
