by Jennifer Armstrong
Overall: 4 out of 5 stars
Personal Evaluation: I had this book on CD. It was interesting to me that the narrator attempted different accents for direct quotes. The narrator was American but most of the characters were British, although there were quite a few Australian accents in there as well for some reason. At any rate, it was more helpful than distracting.
What might interest children: This is quite an exciting story, made all the more exciting by being a true one. Armstrong does a great job of incorporating all sorts of little details so not only do you never forget exactly how miserable the conditions were, you also get a feel for exactly how it was impacting the voyagers, including details about flatulence and body odor, which have a high “ew” factor with kids. I can’t vouch for the quality of illustrations or other reference aids, though, being an audiobook.
