Bud, Not Buddy – Take 1

Bud, Not Buddy
by Christopher Paul Curtis

Overall: Unrated

So, partly because I loved The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and partly because I love Christopher Paul Curtis, and partly because it’s a Summer Reading book and therefore Very Important, I started Bud, Not Buddy.

However.

This book is rough – too rough for my delicate sensibilities.  Bud, an orphan, is sent from the orphanage to a foster family, his third in four years.  9 pages in, he is being beaten up by his foster brother, who has shoved a pencil up his nose and then starts punching and kicking him.  After the foster parents blame him for hurting their son, who is a terrific liar and managed to spin the situation, they lock him in a shed in the backyard with rats and bats and hornets and he recalls a story about a cockroach that I just can’t repeat because at “hornet” I threw the book across the room.

Not that it doesn’t have redeeming qualities.  In the 29 pages I did read, there were some really very funny parts.  I think I even pulled a muscle laughing.  But I have a friend who was adamant that I read this book, and she is tasked with finding out which page I should skip ahead to in order to avoid all the scary stuff.  So stay tuned, there might be a “Take 2” with Bud!
