The Magical Ms. Plum

The Magical Ms. Plum
by Bonnie Becker

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars.

We started reading this book to the 2nd grade at the end of the year, when we were all done with the Caldecott unit and didn’t want to get into anything big.  Ms. Plum reminds me a little bit of Esme Codell (and incidentally, Esme’s book would be perfect for anyone who’s a first-year teacher, or for whom the memories of their first year teaching are fresh as yesterday) and a little bit of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.  Ms. Plum has a magical closet out of which come fantastical animals to teach the kids lessons.  It made a great read-aloud because each chapter was a self-contained story, so it was easy to read one or two chapters per library period.  It’s a nice feel-good book where kids learn lessons, great for kids who like to be pushed gently with happy endings.
